NATURAL PET SUPPLIES FOR YOUR SENIOR DOG
Is your pup getting up there in age? Slowing down just a bit? As parents to some senior dogs ourselves, we wanted to share some tips and tricks for keeping your older fur babies happy and healthy with an array of natural pet products from Kriser’s Natural Pet.
Food: As your dog gets a little less active in his/her old age, you may want to look at adjusting the food. A less rambunctious dog needs a food that is lower in the calorie department, so a little lower in carbs and fat. We will often recommend switching your pet out of a grain diet, if they were on one, and to a lower fat/lower calorie protein like chicken and fish. Some of our favorites are: Orijen Senior, The Honest Kitchen Force Chicken and Primal Turkey & Sardine.
Supplements: You’ll want to keep your senior dog’s joints in great shape, and one way to do this is with a glucosamine and chondroitin supplement like In Clover Connectin or Super Snouts Joint Power. These are proven to help support joint health as part of a healthy diet. We also recommend adding a supplement specifically formulated to support an older pet’s immune system, as well as their eyes, heart and brain health like Dr. Harvey’s Golden Years.
Another great wellness tip is to add coconut oil to your pet’s diet. Coconut oil will help keep his or her coat and skin moisturized and healthy, and will help prevent some of those dry patches that can pop up with age. Coconut oil also features anti-bacterial properties so it can help prevent infections and parasitic issues.
Toys: Just because your pup is older doesn’t mean he or she wants to stop playing! Continuing to play keeps their bodies healthy and happy and their minds engaged and alert. Try a goDog Triceratops, SafeMade Chewy Newt or a Jax & Bones Lobster Rope. You can also give your buddy a puzzle game like Nina Ottosson’s Dog Treat Maze to keep his mind engaged.
Treats: For senior pets who have lost their teeth or have trouble chewing harder things, soft treats are key. We recommend trying freeze-dried options like Stella & Chewy Carnivore Crunchers or moist treats like Wellness Wellbites.
Bed: A supportive, comfortable pet bed is essential for your older friend. Particularly for pets with joint or even sinus problems, you’ll want to make sure your furry friend has a comfy, cozy place to rest. Check out the selection of West Paw Bumper Beds at Kriser’s.
