NULO takes its name from two things that pets need to thrive—nutrition and love (NU + LO). Founded over a decade ago, this pet food company believes that by bringing out the best in our furbabies, in turn, it brings out the best in us. And we couldn’t agree more!

NULO’s History

NULO was founded in Austin, Texas, by Michael Landa, who was inspired by his always-active Labrador Retriever, Max. When he couldn’t find the right dog sitter for Max, Michael took the step that every pet parent dreams about—he quit his corporate job and decided to start his own pet care business. That’s when he learned about the increasing trend in overweight pets and in the administration of at-home insulin shots for diabetic cats and dogs.

Upon further investigation, Michael learned that many pet foods were filled with empty calories that came from filler ingredients like carbohydrates. Some contained more than 40% carb fillers, and meat protein was “supported” by high levels of plant-based proteins—that just won’t do for a carnivore diet.

This was when Michael decided to start NULO. With the help of leading animal nutritionists, veterinarians and food formulators, the company now offers dozens of recipes made with great sources of animal-based proteins that are low in carbs and that use low-glycemic ingredients to promote healthy body condition and stable energy. Of course, Max is still involved, working as NULO’s chief tasting officer!

The NULO Difference

There’s no easy way to make quality food—that’s why NULO doesn’t believe in shortcuts. They carefully select all of their recipes’ ingredients—from proteins including turkey, lamb, salmon and duck to grain-free, low-glycemic carb sources such as lentils, chickpeas and sweet potatoes.

Because dogs and cats thrive on a high-meat, low-carbohydrate diet, NULO’s recipes are especially helpful when it comes to pets who suffer from allergies or sensitivities. Their grain-free formulas help reduce exposure to common allergens and contain more animal-based protein and fats with lower levels of carbs. What you won’t find in their food is corn, rice, wheat, soy, white potatoes, tapioca or gluten-containing ingredients.

Dogs and cats are carnivores, which means that their diets need to be rich in protein and amino acids that can only real meat (not plant-based protein). That’s why NULO’s recipes offer animal-based protein levels that help nourish and repair muscles and tissues… not to mention make every bite tasty!

Low Carb Levels & Low Glycemic Ingredients

If the carbs your pet eats don’t get used up, they turn to fat. Add to that common pet food ingredients such as white rice and tapioca starch can put a strain on your pet’s blood sugar system. NULO combats this problem by only using low-glycemic ingredients in every recipe—this includes whole chickpeas, lentils and sweet potatoes, all of which are alternative carb sources that provide lasting energy and help your pet stay healthy.
